Grim Fate is a commentary on the war being raged against raccoons and the inhumane ways humans deal with them. I am sick of raccoons being singled out as the worst wildlife in the area and the inhumane methods of dealing with them, many of which are more likely to cripple the animal rather than kill it. Grim Fate depicts two raccoons, one alive and one dead. Both animals are personified in the hopes of connecting with the viewer and making them reconsider how they view raccoons. The living raccoon is terrified as it realizes its imminent death, while the skeletal raccoon bears the marks of many deaths, from bullets to snares and even a slit throat. The limited color scheme gives the piece a lifeless feeling, with the red blood seeping from the skeleton and the halo around the living raccoon’s head being the only connections to life. The bloody snare and bottle of poison at the living raccoon’s feet let the viewer know its fate.
